Shostakovich and Rachmaninov push the orchestra to its limits in a concert of powerful contrasts.
Edward Gardner*
Patricia Kopatchinskaja violin
Violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja has built a reputation for performances that are bold, imaginative and completely individual. She's a natural fit for Shostakovich's First Violin Concerto, a gripping post-war work that balances moments of haunting stillness with bursts of extraordinary power.
Edward Gardner conducts Rachmaninov's First Symphony, an ambitious work written while the composer was still in his twenties. Full of dramatic contrasts and rich orchestral writing, it reveals a young composer testing the limits of his imagination.
Please note start time.
