Syrinx attempts to escape the god Pan in Claude Debussy’s evocative work for solo flute. Luonnotar is about the very origins of the earth, while Claude Vivier’s Orion depicts the mysteries of outer space. Khayam’s Je ne suis pas une fable à conter is inspired by the richness and creative abundance of Persian carpets.
Haydn’s spritely Symphony No 39 is delicate and determined, light but vigorous. The Miraculous Mandarin, meanwhile, defies death in one of Bartók’s most thrilling scores.
Barbara Hannigan sings with and conducts the LSO at its full, magnificent capacity. She is joined by Gareth Davies, LSO Principal Flute.
