About this event
In the city of Freud and Klimt, composers turned love, heartbreak and fantasy into music bursting with colour and emotion. Zemlinsky’s The Mermaid – inspired by his unrequited love for Alma Schindler – tells of a mermaid who sacrifices everything for love. After Alma married Gustav Mahler and later began a relationship with Franz Schreker, these personal connections continued to shape the music around her. Schreker’s Nachtstück explores themes of longing and desire, while Zemlinsky’s student Korngold later dedicated his warm and nostalgic Violin Concerto to Alma after building a new life in Hollywood. Tonight, Edward Gardner and Korean violin sensation Bomsori bring these intertwined dreams and desires to life.
