Elgar The Dream of Gerontius (95’)*
‘This is the best of me’, wrote Edward Elgar on the score of The Dream of Gerontius. So put aside any preconception about religious music – and about Elgar, too. This story of a lonely soul’s journey towards eternity is an unforgettable human drama, told in music of extraordinary beauty and sincerity. The LPO has a long history with this very British masterpiece (after all, the orchestra was once conducted by Elgar himself). And as we end our season, Edward Gardner, the London Philharmonic Choir, and three great singers continue that tradition with a performance straight from the heart.
There will be no interval in this performance.
*Sung in English, with surtitles.
**Edward Gardner’s position with the LPO is generously supported by Aud Jebsen.
