About this event

The Music

Tonight’s concert is a feast of new music, composed by recent alumni of the LSO Helen Hamlyn Panufnik Composers’ Scheme. Launched over 20 years ago, the scheme offers six early-career composers the chance to write for a symphony orchestra and crucially, hear their work performed by one of the world’s finest ensembles.

This year, we’re excited to feature brand new music by Laila Arafah and Yunho Jeong, both from last year’s cohort, plus a new Trumpet Concerto by Joel Järventausta (from the 2018/19 intake). Bookending this special showcase are suites of orchestral music from two of John Adams’ most iconic operas: Doctor Atomic and Nixon in China.

The Performers

The LSO’s own Principal Trumpet James Fountain is the soloist for Joel Järventausta’s new Trumpet Concerto. Leading the LSO in this joyful celebration of new composing talent is conductor Elim Chan, a regular guest with the Orchestra and winner of the 2014 Donatella Flick LSO Conducting Competition.
